Bee Mine Tea Party

DSC02873

Normally I would save this draft to share next year closer to Valentine’s Day (which I might forget to do and it will be lost will all my other drafts!) but I can’t wait to share this, it was too much fun.  For Valentine’s Day this year me and my girls threw a “Bee Mine” themed tea party.  But these ideas would work well for a spring tea or party as well.    I have thrown tea parties for over a decade now, but as my daughters have gotten older I knew I wanted to give myself a little break and have more tea parties that involve them.  Luckily I am friends with all of their friends moms so it makes it fun to have their friends along with the moms so we can enjoy it together.  It was so much fun, I don’t know if I could have another tea party without them!  While my tea parties have always been special to me and I still really enjoy that time with friends, there is something about little girls at a tea party that makes my heart happy!  And I know my girls won’t be young for long, and I want to enjoy this while I can.  I involved them in all the planning, cooking, and decorating too.
I made the invites by printing the wording on pink cardstock and adding some embellishments made with my Silhouette cameo.  The bee and hive I found in the Silhouette store but the heart I made by fusing hexagon shapes together.  Don’t ask about how much time I wasted getting that right…

DSC03345

I have lots of flowery tea party linens so we used those to decorate, along with some flowery teapots and a beehive pot as well.
DSC02881

The girls helped make a pinata using a 12″ balloon (I think?) and we cut strips of crepe streamers to glue around, cutting fringe on the bottom half.
I hung it from our light with a grapevine wreath and some bees we made from yellow pom poms.  We wrapped them with black pipe cleaners and attached vellum heart wings.  They were hung with some thread, or you could use fishing line too.
DSC02874
I printed the menu out and added a cute bee clipart to the top, and made the lettering in grew, yellow, and black.  I like putting the sweets and savory in different colors.
DSC03346

I used the “Sparkling Nectar” recipe from Lucy’s Fairy Garden party, found here.  I am always amazed at how much the kids love this.  A 2 liter of 7 up mixed with a bottle of cranberry juice.  Easy!
For the adults I made Hibiscus tea.  You can buy this in bags, I just steep dried hibiscus, it’s the same thing.
DSC02867

I made some “honeycomb snack mix” using my old monster munch recipe, using honeycomb cereal instead of chex, and dipping half the pretzels in black meltys with yellow sprinkles, and the other half of them in yellow meltys with black sprinkles and using valentines m&m’s in place of the reese’s pieces.
DSC02868

Bumble bee pretzels were a big hit.  Just dip large pretzel twists in white meltys and sprinkle with sanding sugar for some wing sparkle.  Place close together on wax paper.  Let dry.  Dip the top third in yellow meltys and place on top of 2 twists.  Carefully add strips with yellow and black nonpareil  sprinkles.  Let dry.  The yellow should “glue” the rod to the wings.
DSC02870

And of course honeycomb candy!

DSC02879

And bee themed sugar cookies of course.  The wings had to get a little luster dust too 🙂
DSC02880
Cupcakes were chocolate with yellow buttercream, and a bumble bee made from marshmallow fondant.
DSC02872

Scones and honey butter!  Just whip butter with a little honey for the honey butter.
DSC02878
For the sandwiches I made Artichoke, Radish, and Curry Chicken.
DSC02883
Plus some kid sandwiches.  I made all of them using this bee and hive Tovolo sandwich cutter we had.
Some I made with P”BEE” and honey, and the others into fairy bread.

DSC02875

For fairy bread, just spread bread with frosting or butter and liberally coat with nonpareil sprinkles.  I did yellow for the hives and black for the bees.  Fairy bread is ALWAYS a hit with kids.
DSC02876

I was excited to put my “Bee happy” cookie mold from House on the Hill to good use too!
DSC02466

This was the best part.  I didn’t even take many pictures, I was enjoying watching the girls have fun so much!
DSC02891

If you have never had a tea party with little girls, you are missing out!
DSC02888

You can see them in the background a little, I forgot to take a picture, but we made “roses” from hershey kisses for each guest to take home along with a plastic ring that had a bumble bee with a heart that said “bee mine”.  My little one found them at the cake decorating store and couldn’t resist. 🙂

Mickey Mouse Party

100_6014
I’m attempting to go through my pictures and catch up on getting them printed… and I keep finding pictures I meant to post here… and thought I did… but never had. :p  Blogging is probably not the best hobby for me.  🙂
A couple years ago my daughter was quite in love with anything Mickey Mouse so of course that was her theme for her birthday party.
I came up with a few cute and easy treats to go with that theme.
For the cake I did 3 layers.  2 for the cake and one I cut out a large circle and 2 smaller circles for a mickey shape.  First I frosted the cake yellow, then placed the 3 circles on top and carefully frosted it red.  Added some Mickey sprinkles and 2 skewers…

100_6002

Then covered the skewers with some striped paper straws…

100_6003

Then added some bunting.  Made from string, paper, and scrapbooking stickers.

100_6004

100_6006

For the candy cups I made some cups from red candy melts using my chocolate cup mold:
100_5902

After the red was set I placed a scoop of fruity pebble rice crispy treats in each:
100_5904

Then I dipped the top of each in melted semi sweet chocolate.
100_5906

Before the chocolate set I added 2 m & m’s for ears, then used a little chocolate for glue to add some large sprinkles to the red cups for buttons.

100_5907

I also made some with chocolate bases, white chocolate on top, and sprinkled with mickey sprinkles.

100_6008

For the Oreo pops I added a popsicle stick to the middle of each cookie and used chocolate to “glue” in some ears. (Mini oreos).

100_5996

Add the top back on…

100_5997

And add a ribbon.  Or dip in chocolate first.

100_6007

The favors were simple.  Made ears from cheap headbands and some felt, the gloves were from the dollar tree in the makeup section, and some Mickey coloring sheets and a ball.

100_5999

Put each in a red bag (I got a set of them super cheap.. I think at Michaels?)  I had a mickey mouse paper punch so I used that to decorate the tags.

Fairy Party

fairy party1
This was such a magical little party.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of little girls so happy.  I think this will remain one of my favorite parties we’ve ever had, just because how happy they all were!  The food was very simple, and just perfect.  The girls loved everything.
DSC00849

MENU:
-Strawberries dipped in pink candy melts, drizzled with white chocolate and sprinkles.
-Gummy butterflies
-Candy buttons and flowers
-“Fairy Wands” and “Butterflies (Made using candy melts and sprinkles)

DSC00841
-“Fairy Bread”  Basically sprinkles on bread 🙂  You can use butter, cream cheese, whatever to spread on bread and then cover with sprinkles.  I used some frosting left over from the cake and cut into butterflies.
DSC00847
-“Toadstools” I made 2 kinds.  One using miniature marshmallows and candy buttons, using a dab of frosting to glue.  The other using string cheese (cut into chunks) and topped with a cherry tomato half, using cream cheese to glue.
DSC00845

DSC00846
For drinks we had “sparkling flower nectar”.. or a 2 liter of 7 up mixed with a bottle of cranberry juice. 🙂
DSC00853
And “Fairy Milk”.  (Strawberry milk).  I put paper butterflies on the straws and served in mini milk bottles.
DSC00854
For the cake I made 2 small tiers, with a cupcake for the fairy house.  I decorated with marshmallow fondant and candy flowers, and fairies from a fairy toob.
DSC00850
We also made some cupcakes, topping with a tiny fairy house made from marshmallow fondant as well.  These were super easy, just rolled a log of fondant, cut into chunks and cut out flower shapes for the roofs and rectangles for the doors.  And of course some flower sprinkles to finish off 🙂
DSC00852
We got lucky with some dry weather, so I decorated our back patio.  I used some spare sheer curtains on our awning and hung a grapevine wreath from the top and tied some tulle pom poms to that.  I strung some pink tulle around and some butterfly garlands.
DSC00856
For the butterfly garlands, I cut tons of butterflies with my Silhouette Cameo in lots of colors…
DSC00816

Then I sandwiched 2 butterflies and sewed them together, running my thread between each set.  These were super cute, and because I used thread they looked like they were flying.  Only downside is… they got tangled super easy too.  Maybe ribbon would be a better choice.
DSC00907

I made each girl a little flower wreath and some fairy wings.  For the fairy wings I sewed 2 wing shapes together out of a shimmery fabric and enclosed some wire in the edge.  I attached some elastic bands to go around their arms.
DSC00858
For the flower wreaths I hand sewed silk flowers to wide ribbon, then enclosed the ribbon around a loop of wire, and added some long ribbons to trail down the back.
DSC00815
As soon as all the guests arrived, they put on their wreaths and wings and took some snacks outside to eat.
DSC00860
I knew this would be a popular thing, but i had NOOO IDEA how fast they would flock when I said it was time to make fairy gardens!  First, I put out paints and brushes and each girl got a little birdhouse to paint.
DSC00871

My little Lucy with her masterpiece 🙂
DSC00876
After they were painted, I brought out trays with things to fill the fairies garden.
They each got a terra cotta saucer to put their fairy garden in, and we had silk flowers, clay toadstools, rocks with “welcome fairies” written on them, bark, moss, little plastic hearts, shells, pretty much whatever else I found in our craft supplies I thought they would like. 🙂

DSC00887

When the girls left they each took home their fairy garden, wings, flower wreaths, and they each picked a fairy from the fairy toob we had used for decorating to put in their garden.
If you need more fairy garden ideas, you can see my post here on our indoor fairy garden and DIY accessories.

“Mr. Rogers Neighborhood” Birthday Party

Mr R

My girl is Mr. Rogers #1 fan.  I sincerely doubt anyone could ever love him more than her!  Part of having autism means that when you like something, you generally REAAAAALLY like something. 🙂  I am quite grateful that she loves the show so much though, since it has been a huge part of her overcoming fear and anxiety about things like going to the doctor.
I had NO luck finding fun information online or anywhere for throwing a Mr Rogers themed party so I wanted to share it here in case anyone else wants to do one!  These ideas would work well for doing a “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” themed party as well.

I used a poster we have in our homeschool classroom to decorate, and some bunting from the Circus party.    Her invites were simple, with a picture of trolley and said “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a party… won’t you come to Amelia’s birthday party?”  and all the information.

We served a simple lunch I decided to make cake pops in the shape of her favorite characters from the show.  “X the owl” was one of my favorites.  I think he turned out pretty good. 🙂
x the owl

Behind each characters cake pop I made a sign to go with them.  X the owl always said “Nifty Galifty”!
DSC01104
Henrietta Pussycat was invited too of course…
henrietta

They were “meow meow yummy” all right. 🙂

DSC01102

And we couldn’t forget Daniel striped tiger!
daniel striped tiger
And last but not least, don’t forget Mr. McFeely!
I just had to add some “Speedy Delivery” tags 🙂
mr mcfeely

For the activity we decorated cookies, Amelia’s favorite activity.
Truth be told, all the kids love doing it too.  One of the best kids activities ever.
Each kid got their own tray with frosting, sprinkles, and sugar cookies.  I made Mr Rogers themed shapes, like an owl, crown for king friday, fish- for the fish Mr Rogers always fed in the show, sneaker, trolley-this was made by slightly adapting a train car cutter I had.  I was going to do a stop light and sweater, but forgot.
DSC01077

And the cake was a no brainer.  Amelia was ADAMANT on having an “orange tiger cake”.  I made it 3 layers, using 2 for the face, and cutting 2 circles for the ears from the other one. (I cut off the bottom third for each ear).  I frosted it orange, then used marshmallow fondant to roll out and make the details.
daniel tiger cake

She loved it!
DSC01097

Mr. Rogers himself stopped by 😉
Is he not the best Daddy ever?!  I found him a sweater and some sneakers at a second hand store, and the girls picked out a trolley tie pin for him for his birthday. 🙂  My little one wanted to be Mr. McFeely for the party, so I whipped together the mailbag and hat for her the morning before the party.
DSC01045

I used her gifts to decorate for the party as well, and I can’t rave enough about the neighborhood trolley from Holgate Toys.  It has a lifetime warranty too.
DSC01110

My mom got her this sweet snowglobe, she just loves it.
DSC01113
I got lucky and also found some vintage Mr Rogers puppets and books on ebay at a good deal as well.
We also played a CD of him singing during the party.

For the favors I got the kids these travel cups and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood pencils, again from the Fred Rogers Company.
DSC01114
And they also have Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood cups if you go that route.
DSC01115
Ugga Mugga friends!

Resources for Mr Rogers products:
The Fred Rogers Company Store: they have shirts, pins, cups, pencils, soup mugs, cds, books, you name it.  We have looked everywhere for a cd of Mr Rogers himself singing, and finally found it here.  Alot of pretty inexpensive items as well.

Holgate Toys
: They have a whole section for Mr Rogers toys! Excellent warranty and customer service.  I had ordered her trolley through a store on Amazon, but it came broken.  I called Holgate and they sent a replacement to me directly, making sure I got it before her birthday.  I will definitely be ordering from them again!

PBS Kids
:  They have some e-cards, coloring pages, printable sheet music, etc.

You could also look on Ebay and such for vintage books,  puppets, etc.

Love Shacks!

ls

I think I actually enjoy Valentine’s Day more since having kids.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my hubby, even now that we’ve been married over 11 years.  Even more than when we were googly-eyed newlyweds.   But having kids as just magnified that for me.  We have even more love in our home!
So for Valentine’s Day we celebrate as a family.  I make a fun dinner and we make “Love Shacks”.  Sugar cookie houses loaded with fun.
loveshack2
We had a few friends and their kids over this year and made a party of it.  Each kid got a house to decorate, and we put tons of valentines candy down the middle of the table.

Each kid got a small plate with some frosting and a knife (pre-“glueing” the houses together really helps here, they won’t fall apart even with tons of candy on them).
You could also give each kid a piping bag or a ziplock with a snipped corner of frosting.
We started this tradition because our oldest daughter adores decorating cookies and gingerbread houses.  We usually make a few for friends or family who might be going through a rough time, like the elderly widow down the street we visit with, or someone we love, like my daughter’s therapist.
Autism has not stopped my sweet girl from being a sweetheart, that’s for sure!

DSC00141
For Sugar Cookie Houses:

4 cups flour
1 T baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
2/3 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 T milk
1 T vanilla

In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and shortening together until softened.
Add sugar and beat until fluffy.   Add milk, eggs, and vanilla, mix until well blended.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.  Add to dough and mix until well mixed.  Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate a couple hours to a few days.
Roll out sections of dough on silicone mats. (I find it helpful to cover dough with a piece of wax paper or plastic wrap so you don’t have to over-flour the surface of the dough to roll it out.)

Here is a template for houses that works well for small kids houses.

Cut out shapes and take away excess.  I find it works well to have the shapes up against each other, so there is less room for expansion.
DSC00120

Bake at 375 degrees for 6 to 12 minutes, depending on size of shapes.
You want it slightly golden brown.  Within a minute of taking out of the oven, I slide the silicone mat onto a flat counter and trim any excess that may have expanded during baking, and re-score lines.
DSC00121
After pieces are cool, make royal icing.  Fill a piping bag (or even just a ziplock with a snipped corner) and “glue” houses together.  I like to use overturned paper plates like my friend Angela does, it makes decorating easier.
Ideally, “glue” the houses together at least one day before decorating, it makes them more stable for little ones who like to add alot of heavy candy 😉

For Royal
Icing:
1 lb powdered sugar
3 egg whites (you can substitute 2 T meringue powder and 6 T water alternatively)
1/2 tsp cream of tartar

Mix all icing ingredients together until stiff peaks form when the beater is pulled out.  Decorate as desired!

Pink Tea Party

100_8274

Is there anything better than a tea party? How about a tea party with little girls?  Last year we made some fancy invites (I’ll add a picture when I find it!), there really is something about kids receiving an invite in the mail that makes them feel special!  I kept it small, just invited 2 friends and their daughters, so we could really enjoy it while keeping it simple.  It was such a fun day, and I know we’ll do this again!  It would also make for a fun Valentine’s Day Tea Party as well.

100_8288

For an activity, I made some felt crowns for the girls to decorate.I just cut out a crown shape and topstitched 2 together to make them firmer.

I put out some silk flowers, jewels, ribbon, etc for the girls to decorate them with (the adults used a hot glue gun to glue in place for them).
100_8263

They were pretty happy with their creations!

100_8270 100_8266
For the food I made the following: (along with some regular tea sandwiches for us moms!)
PINK FLOATS
A scoop or 2 of vanilla ice cream with strawberry soda
100_8284

We also had water for the teacups, because you can’t have a tea party without teacups!

100_8292

PINK DEVILED EGGS
Made just like my usual ones but the egg whites were placed in some tinted water for 10-15 minutes.  I used food coloring, but you could use pretty much anything pink, like beet juice.

100_8281
PINK PINWHEELS
Cut crusts off bread, spread with strawberry cream cheese, roll up, and slice into pinwheels.
I also made some by rolling out bread with a rolling pin to flatten it, then spreading with raspberry jam, and making pinwheels the same as above.

100_8279

MARSHMALLOW POPS
Insert popsicle sticks into pink marshmallows, dip the top half in melted white chocolate or melties, and place a red m&m on top and sprinkle with sprinkles.

COCONUT ICE
Recipe here, but made with just pink and white layers

100_8282

I didn’t do alot of decorating for it, but me and the girls did make a giant pink pompom (directions here), and I put some pink tulle on the tablecloth.

Circus Party

Here is a list of what we put together for our little one’s “circus” party:
Cotton Candy
Bought a couple containers at Dollar Tree, put it in some snow cone holders I had from Cash & Carry- very cheap.  Cut some holes in a gift box to hold them, a wire cupcake stand would work well too.
Caramel Popcorn with Peanuts
Made homemade, put in a bowl with a scoop and served with some retro paper popcorn bags I had in the cupboard.  (Just google retro popcorn bags and you’ll find lots of options.)
Circus Peanuts
I found these at Dollar Tree, Walmart, and Winco.
Circus Napkins
Found at Target (They also had plates, cups, invites, etc.  I just hate spending $25 dollars on a bunch of paper stuff I’m going to throw away.)
Hot Dogs, Root Beer, and Potato Chips
I kept the food beyond simple, since it was our little one’s bday and that is her favorite treat.  I served lunch in some plastic food baskets we have with some checkered liners (again, a super cheap Cash & Carry find).
Bunting
I made these by cutting out triangles of felt and sewing into some double fold bias tape I’ve had for forever.  Took very little time, and I thought this would be a fun reusable birthday decoration.

The cake wasn’t what I originally intended, but worked out well.
You can make it using 3 layers of your favorite cake, and shaving off the top into a dome (or bake in one of those giant cupcake pans).
Frost with white frosting, then roll out different colors of marshmallow fondant and cut out details.
I did large triangles in red, green, blue, and yellow for the top.  Then added red strips around the sides, and the curtain is 2 rectangles of red, scrunched in the middle and “tied” with a rope of green and yellow twisted together. Ther banner was made using a mini alphabet cutter set and mini star cutter. I attatched it with a toothpick on each side.
I added a ruffle of purple around the bottom and where the top of the big top meets the sides.
Top flag is just made from construction paper and on a toothpick.
Elephant Pinata
Made using a large and medium balloon.  Mix equal parts flour and water.  Cut newspaper into 1 1/2″ strips, dip in paste and wipe off excess paste, then wrap around balloons, 2 layers deep, leaving a small opening around the knot.
After a day or two it should be dry, then remove balloons through small hole.  Using more newspaper and paste, attatch the balloons together at the “neck”.  When dry, cut a hole and fill with bags of goodies, then cut fringe on half of strips of crepe paper and glue all the way around.  Make features with foam paper or constuction paper and glue on.
Other Game Ideas
You can find all kinds of simple, easy circus or carnival type game ideas online. We had planned on putting a couple folding tables in the backyard and having a few:
“Ball Toss”- making a pyramid of big red plastic cups and letting the kids take turns tossing a ball to knock them down.
“Clothespin Drop”- The kids have to stand on a chair and drop clothespins, trying to hit the jar on the ground.
You could also do a face painting booth, or have tickets they win for prizes as well.  Since we had just finished finally assembling our play structure and I knew all the kids would want to play in that, I decided to not have the other games.  Nobody missed them. Favor Bags
I found these cute favor bags at Target and couldn’t pass them up. : )
I filled them with mini lollipops, clown noses (found super cheap on Amazon), chocolate “ringmaster mustaches” (made using a mold from Bake It Pretty), a “magic feather”, and some candy buttons.
I made the tags for the mustaches and feathers using a free Circus font on dafont.com, just printing on cardstock and cutting out into tags, tying on with some twine.
She makes a pretty cute ringmaster! : )  The mustaches were very popular.Invitations
I just printed on cardstock, using a few fonts, including the free Circus font I found on dafont.com, and an imageof Dumbo on the bottom, I just copied and pasted from the internet.  (Just google free dumbo clipart and choose the one you want.)
Thank You Cards
I found some free ones I printed off at bakesaleflyers.com
If you don’t want to make them, I saw lots of options for buying circus invites/thank you’s online, and Target had a pack for sale as well when I bought the napkins and favor bags.  There are also a couple of free printable circus invites online, but I hate filling in each invite.
