Baked and crispy don’t always go hand in hand. But these really deliver!
Baking powder and cornstarch really help give the crunch factor.
You can make them as spicy as you like by adding more chipotle powder too. I like using ancho powder more, as it gives flavor without heat.
Crispy Baked BBQ Chicken Wings

Ingredients
- 2 1/2 pounds chicken wings, cut into wingettes and drumettes)
- BBQ sauce for topping
For coating:
- 1 Tablespoon baking powder
- 2 Tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 Tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon ancho chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
Instructions
- Heat oven to 450 degrees.
- Whisk all of the coating ingredients together in a large bowl.
- Add chicken and coat thoroughly.
- Spread out on a parchment lined baking tray.
- Bake for 30 minutes, add BBQ sauce and toss to coat.
- Return to oven for 10 minutes. (If they aren’t as crisp as desired broil for an additional few minutes.
